Rubbish collection and recycling
Yesterday was the day for both rubbish collection and recycling.
When I got home from work last night, the rubbish bag was still laid on the ground next to the door and recycling box was filled with bottles. What's wrong? Why didn't they collect them? ...
Checked my neighbor's rubbish bin, EMPTY. Well, maybe they don't collect rubbish in bags but in the bin only. Certainly this contradicts to what I was told by the city council. Better call them tomorrow to make sure this, and request a waste bin anyway (even though I have to leave the bin on the street, sorry).
What about recycling? I spent a minute to read the print on the black box and noticed that plastic bottles were not among the items! Let me see what's in my box: plastic milk bottles, water bottles... wait a minute, some glass bottles. They should be recycled. My fault. I should have read ...

DIY
Do you like DIY? I don't particularly like it, but I can do it (with mistakes sometimes).
The wardrobe which I ordered from IKEA was delivered to my house yesterday. Looking at two big heavy boxes, I wondered if this was something I could handle by myself. "No problem", I told myself. (It's just typical of me.)
Then I started to assemble this three door wardrobe. I started with a serious mistake. I thought that my bedroom was not big enough so that I should do it in the living room and move it into my bedroom later. In fact, I deceived myself by false perception of dimension. Of course, I didn't realise it at the beginning. So I assembled the frame and tried to move it into my bedroom. No matter how hard I tried, I could not find a position to let the wardrobe pass the door of bedroom. DAMN IT! ... The ultimate solution was to take it into pieces and re-assemble in the bedroom. ... Pushed the bed to one side, moved the suitcases, got enough space to DIY...
Eventually the wardrobe was assembled! (Actually there were two mistakes, but I was reluctantly to make any correction.)
Even though it was not perfect, I made it! :-)

Moving
As you see from the previous post, finally I moved into this two bedroom flat in Redland.
Friends came to help me moving on 5 July. They were very efficient and they finished moving more than 30 boxes in one hour with three cars. Many thanks to my dear friend!
Now I am still in the process of unpacking, cleaning and arranging, which seems endless ... Meanwhile, I am waiting for the wardrobe from IKEA. You may think the house is a mess. Kind of, but it is functioning properly! A bed to sleep, a kitchen to cook, a bathroom to use ...
So far so good!

A hymn that I have been enjoying
So, why not open up and call His name, "Oh Lord!"
Find your spirit where His grace has been outpoured.
Call His name, taste His grace, exercise before His face
He's longing and yearning.
He's hoping and waiting.
He's ever desiring for you...
To turn to Him.
Here is the hymn, enjoy!

Zero Degrees
Are you talking about temperature? No, absolutely not. I am talking about the restaurant, Zero Degrees.
What I experienced there is quite positive. The dining environment is modern, open, spacious, but bit noisy. Speaking of food, pasta and pizza are nice, but not extraordinary. I had half wood roasted vegetables pizza and half porcini mushroom pizza. (Good to have friend to share food!) The mushroom pizza is great. But the tomato sauces in the veg. pizza was bit too sour. Other than that, I had nothing to complain. (Haven't tried their mussels yet, but they look very nice.)
ZERODEGREES is a pioneering drinking and dining concept at the forefront of the emerging trend towards fresh, handcrafted beers brewed by microbreweries. This is what is claimed on their website.

Looking away unto Jesus

1st class or not?
Today we had final exam board meeting. It's my first time to attend such a meeting and I found it's quite complicated regarding that we had to go through each student's record and agree on marks and the degree class for the final year students. It's entertaining as well, in a sense that some discussions were quite thoughtful and intense.
Personally speaking, I was happy indeed, because one of my students was awarded 1st class degree eventually after 1st round discussion and 2nd round reconsideration. He deserves that. Congratulations!

Last night I went to see a silent movie, King Of Kings, directed by Cecil B. DeMille in 1927, with organ improvisation from International Concert Organist David Briggs. Both the movie and music are very impressive!!!

Verse from Psalm 139
Psa 139:23-24 Search me, O God, and know my hearts; try me, and know my anxious thoughts; and see if there is some harmful way in me, and lead me on the eternal way.

Being Guarded by the Power of God
I enjoyed the 1Peter 1:5 very much last week. It says, " Who are being guarded by the power of God through faith unto a salvation ready to be revealed at the last time". Thank you Lord that we are being guarded by the power of God through faith. The power of God is the means by which we are being guarded. Faith is the secondary means through which the power of God becomes effective in guarding us. Thus, the power of God is on God's side, and the faith is on our side. This indicates that we need to cooperate with the power of God. If we cooperate in this way, we shall be kept in the right position to enjoy our heavenly inheritance. The result of this guarding is salvation, which is full salvation, ultimate salvation.

Hay fever
Recently I have been having itchy eyes and running nose, sneezing and coughing. At the beginning I though it's kind of cold or flu. I didn't make the connection to hay fever. Wait a miniute, it didn't look like either cold or flu. Haha, hay fever. Well, I have to live with it until the summer is here (hopefully).

A Little Frustration
I always say that I enjoy teaching. Yes, it is true in general, but not for today.
I planned to go through random variable and probability distributions in the lecture this morning. The class started as usual, but it was so hard to move forward. Everytime when I asked them a question, I rarely got any response. Then I thought they didn't understand the question. So I explained it again to make sure that they understood, and worked with them together step by step. Very slow. After I finished the binomial distribution, it was already 40 minutes passed. I thought I would finish the lecture with Poisson distribution, but I was behind. Anyway, I didn't rush into Poisson distribution. Instead, I gave them another example of binomial distribution. (A very good choice!)
I was very frustrated after the lecture: 1. behind the schedule; 2. lack of response from students; and 3. my own attitude (tried to cheer students and myself up, but it was not a success).
What should I do? Ignore the students, just deliver the lecture anyway? I doubt ...
Through lectures I want to make sure that students get the main idea and the big picture of the subject. For the details, if they do not get them in class, they can work out by themselves, with the help from textbook and etc (this is also an important part of their learning process). When I ask them questions, I just want to get feedback and check if they get the big picture or not. When there is a lack of response, I dont know where they are. (I cound not tell from their faces this mroning. BLANK!) Maybe I need more preparation. Think about the challenges students may encounter ...
(I tell myself it is OK not to be perfect.)

A lovely day
When I have lunch in the kitchen, it is just so lovely. Plenty sunshine with hot noodle soup, a great combination.
I am going to visit Birmingham this afternoon. A sister just called to inform me that there would be a meeting at the new meeting hall tonight. Looking forward to meeting the saints there.

Bridge Cafe
Bridge Cafe is located in Avon George Hotel. It has a great view of suspension bridge. The dining area is comfortable, the food is good. The only comment that I have is the quality of the chocolate, which they served after the meal, does not match the quality of the food. I think it is a shame.

Blue Monday
Blue Monday is a name given to a date calculated to be the most depressing day of the year. Yesterday was the Blue Monday fo 2008.
The data was calculated by Dr Cliff Arnall at the University of Cardiff. The date was calculated by using many factors, plugged into a formula. The factors include: weather conditions, debt level (the difference between debt accumulated and our ability to pay), time since Christmas, time since failing our new year’s resolutions, low motivational levels and feeling of a need to take action.
It is up to you to believe or not.

Being constituted by and with the Lord as the life-giving and transforming Spirit
2Cor 3:17 And the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
2Cor 3:18 But we all with unveiled face, beholding and reflecting like a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord Spirit.

January @ Bristol
January is miserable at Bristol. Why? Because of rain, it is so wet. BTW, rain has already caused lots of flooding in this area.
It was bit of sunny yesterday afternoon. So I seized the opportunity to take a walk. But the weather changed so quickly . Unfortunately I was caught by rain and ended up with sitting in my office with damp clothes.

Invigilating
Happy New Year!
On the first day back to school, the first year undergraduates have to take their mid-sessional examinations. I was scheduled to invigilate for an extra-time exam at 9am this morning. According to the instruction, I arrived the class room at 8:30am and got everything ready. It was 9 o'clock, but nobody else was there except me. Strange. What's going on? I kept waiting for the students in the room and thought I would wait until 9:30, if there were no one then I'd leave. ( It's based on the instruction too.)
Rebecca then informed me that students went to the wrong location and they were coming. What an incident! Ten minutes later six students showed up. Exam started at 9:30am.
